The Cultural Triangle is the dry-zone heartland between Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. Inside it sit some of the island's UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the rock citadel of Sigiriya, the painted caves of Dambulla, the great stupas and sacred Bodhi tree of Anuradhapura and the medieval palaces and carved Buddhas of Polonnaruwa.
They are all within an hour or two of each other, so most travellers stay in one base near Sigiriya or Habarana for two to four nights and make day trips. That saves packing every morning, and your driver handles the short hops between sites.
Each site has its own character. Anuradhapura is spread out and still a living place of pilgrimage, with white-clad worshippers at the stupas, so it rewards a full day. Polonnaruwa is more compact and easy to explore by bicycle on a flat circuit. Dambulla takes an hour or two and fits neatly into an afternoon.
Sigiriya to Kandy is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive, so they pair naturally. Climb Sigiriya at first light, see Dambulla in the afternoon, then drive south the next day in time for the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the last royal capital and a UNESCO site in its own right.
Our 7-day Sri Lanka Discovery does exactly this before heading to Ella and the south. If history is the main reason you are coming, the 12-day Ancient Cities & Hill Country adds a leopard safari in Wilpattu, Anuradhapura by tuk-tuk and Polonnaruwa by bicycle.
The ancient cities are in the dry zone, so they work for most of the year. January to April and June to September are usually the most comfortable. The Kandy Esala Perahera, a procession of drummers, dancers and decorated elephants, runs for about ten nights in July or August. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so ask us early if you want to be there, because Kandy hotels fill quickly.
Our month-by-month guide covers the other festivals, including Vesak in May and Poson in June.
Timing is everything here. The big sites are best before the heat and the tour buses, which means leaving the hotel at dawn. With your own driver you set the start time, rest at the hotel through the middle of the day and head out again for sunset at a stupa. Your driver also knows the dress code at each temple: shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off.
Every route can be changed, so tell us which sites matter to you on Plan my trip and we will build the days around them.
Questions
Two full days covers Sigiriya, Dambulla and either Polonnaruwa or a safari. Three or four days lets you add Anuradhapura and see everything without rushing.
It is a steady climb up steps and metal stairways, with a few exposed sections near the top. Take it slowly, start early before the heat, and allow a couple of hours for the climb, the frescoes and the water gardens.
Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats before entering. A light scarf or sarong in the day bag makes it easy, and socks help on hot stone in the afternoon.
Yes. Ask us whether a licensed chauffeur guide is available for your dates, or we can help you find a local site guide at the bigger sites.
Yes, if your dates match. It is held in July or August and the dates change every year, so tell us early and we will plan your Kandy nights around it.
