Sri Lanka looks small on a map. It’s roughly 430 km from top to bottom. That makes it tempting to plan a trip that sees everything in a week.
The catch is the roads. Outside the expressways, most routes are two-lane roads through towns, villages and, in the hill country, endless hairpin bends. A drive that looks like 100 km on the map can easily take three hours. So the real question isn’t how many places you can visit, but how many you can enjoy.
Here’s our honest guide to what fits, based on the routes our drivers know best.
How long does it take to drive around Sri Lanka?
As a rough rule, plan on an average of about 30 km/h in the hill country and 40 to 50 km/h on the busy coastal roads. The expressways from Colombo to the airport and down to Galle, Matara and Hambantota are much quicker.
| Journey | Distance | Usual time by road |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo Airport to Kandy | about 105 km | 3–4 hrs |
| Colombo Airport to Sigiriya | about 150 km | 3.5–4 hrs |
| Colombo Airport to Galle | about 150 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
| Kandy to Sigiriya | about 90 km | 2.5–3 hrs |
| Kandy to Nuwara Eliya | about 75 km | 2.5–3 hrs |
| Kandy to Ella | about 140 km | 4.5–5 hrs |
| Ella to Yala | about 90 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
| Yala to Mirissa | about 120 km | 2.5–3 hrs |
These times are without long stops. Add time for lunch, a tea factory or a waterfall, and for traffic around towns. The famous Kandy to Ella train normally takes six to seven hours, so treat it as a day’s sightseeing rather than a quick transfer. Storm damage in late 2025 closed the line between Kandy and Nanu Oya; the most scenic stretch, from Nanu Oya to Ella, reopened in June 2026, and your driver can take you to Nanu Oya to ride that part.
How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?
For most first visits, 10 to 14 days is the sweet spot. It’s enough to see the ancient cities, the hill country, a national park and the beach, with two nights in most places. Shorter trips work well too, as long as you choose one or two regions and don’t try to cover the whole island.
| Days | Best for | Sample route | Our tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | A short break or a stopover | Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Bentota | 5-day Kandy, Tea Country & the Coast |
| 7 | A first taste of everything | Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala, Mirissa | 7-day Sri Lanka Discovery |
| 10 | Most first-time visitors | Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Mirissa, Galle | 10-day Classic Round Tour |
| 14 | The full island at an easy pace | Yala, Ella, Kandy, Sigiriya, Pasikudah, Trincomalee | 14-day Grand Tour with the East Coast |
| 21 | Slow travel and wildlife | Wilpattu, Sigiriya, east coast, Kandy, Ella, Yala, Mirissa | 21-day Ultimate Sri Lanka |
What can you see in 5 days in Sri Lanka?
Five days is enough for one loop through the middle of the island and back to the coast. Don’t try to add Sigiriya, Ella and Yala as well; you’d spend most of your holiday in the car.
A good shape is Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth, then up into the tea country around Nuwara Eliya, then down to the beach at Bentota before heading back to Colombo. The drive from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota is the long day, at around five to six hours. Our 5-day Kandy, Tea Country & the Coast follows exactly this route.
If you’d rather focus on the beach and history, Galle and the south coast make an easy, relaxed five days with short drives.
Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?
A week lets you see the highlights, but it’s a busy week. A typical route goes from the airport to Sigiriya, then Kandy, the hill country to Ella, a safari in Yala and a final night on the south coast. Our 7-day Sri Lanka Discovery does this with one night in most places.
It works well for travellers who like to keep moving. If you want time to sit by a pool, drop one region. Skipping Yala, for example, gives you a slower day in Ella and an extra beach day.
Couples on a honeymoon might prefer the 8-day Culture & Coast in Style, which spends longer by the sea.
What does a 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary look like?
Ten days is where Sri Lanka starts to feel relaxed. You can include the Cultural Triangle or the hill country in depth, a proper safari and two or three beach days, with fewer early starts.
Our 10-day Classic Sri Lanka Round Tour runs Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Mirissa and Galle. If ancient cities are your priority, the 12-day Ancient Cities & Hill Country adds Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
Is 2 weeks in Sri Lanka too long?
Not at all. Two weeks is what we recommend for anyone who wants to see the whole island without rushing. It gives you time for the north-central ancient cities, the hill country, Yala and the south coast, plus either the east coast or extra beach days.
Between roughly May and September, the 14-day Grand Tour with the East Coast adds Trincomalee and Pasikudah, when the east has its best weather. From December to April, you might swap the east coast for more time in the south and west instead. Our best time to visit guide explains which coast is sunny when.
What can you do with 3 weeks in Sri Lanka?
Three weeks is a real luxury. You can stay two nights almost everywhere, add a second national park like Wilpattu, spend proper time on both coasts and finish with several lazy beach days. Our 21-day Ultimate Sri Lanka is built around exactly this kind of slow travel.
It’s also a good length for families with younger children, who usually prefer shorter drives and longer stays.
What are the most common planning mistakes?
Too many one-night stops
Packing and unpacking every morning is tiring, and it means you mostly see places in the late afternoon. Where you can, stay two nights. Even on a short trip, one fewer stop often makes for a better holiday.
Underestimating the hill roads
Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy are close on the map but slow to reach. Kandy to Ella is about 140 km, yet it takes 4.5 to 5 hours by road. Don’t plan a long drive and a big sightseeing day in the hills on the same day.
Not checking the Kandy to Ella train early
Storm damage in late 2025 closed the line between Kandy and Nanu Oya, and repairs are still under way. The Nanu Oya to Ella stretch, the most scenic part, reopened in June 2026. When the full line is running, reserved seats usually go on sale around 30 days before travel and can sell out within days in peak season. If the train matters to you, ask us early. Either way, your driver can take you by road, which has its own views, with stops at waterfalls and tea factories.
Trying to see both coasts in the wrong season
The south and east coasts have their best weather at different times of year. Choose the coast that suits your dates rather than trying to fit in both.
Arriving or leaving on a tight schedule
Long-haul flights often land early in the morning. A long drive straight after arrival is hard work. A first night in Negombo or Colombo, or a first stop within three or four hours of the airport, makes the start much easier.
Plan your own route
Every trip we run can be changed: more days in one place, fewer in another, or a completely different route. Tell us how long you have, when you’re travelling and what you enjoy on Plan my trip, and we’ll send you a route that fits, with a fixed price per vehicle.
