FAQ
Questions, answered honestly. Hiring a private driver in Sri Lanka
Can't find what you need? Ask us directly. A real person replies, usually within a few hours.
How much does a private driver cost?
A car and driver starts from $65 a day, for the whole vehicle, not per person, with fuel, tolls and the driver's meals and room included. A 7-day tour starts from $455 per vehicle. Send us your dates and group size and we'll confirm one fixed price.
What's included?
Your private air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking driver, fuel, expressway tolls and parking, the driver's meals and accommodation, and airport pickup and drop-off on round tours. Entrance tickets, safari jeeps, train tickets, your meals, tips and your accommodation are paid separately. We confirm everything in writing with your quote.
Can I change my itinerary during the trip?
Yes. Your driver is with you every day, so if you want to stay longer somewhere or skip a stop, just say. If a change adds a lot of distance, we'll tell you about any extra cost before you decide.
Do I pay in advance?
No large deposit is needed. We usually ask for a small advance to confirm the dates, and you pay the rest during the trip. We'll explain the options when we send your quote.
Is Sri Lanka safe?
Sri Lanka is a friendly and welcoming country and most visitors feel very safe. Our drivers know the roads, avoid night driving in the hills and are always on hand if you need help.
Where does the driver stay and eat?
Most hotels have separate driver rooms and meals. Where they don't, we arrange a nearby guesthouse. This is included in our price, so you never pay extra for it.
Do you do airport pickups?
Yes. Your driver tracks your flight and waits at arrivals with your name on a sign. If you land late at night, we suggest a first night near the airport, such as in Negombo, before any long drive. One-way airport transfers are also available at a fixed price.
Can you book train seats and safaris?
Yes. We can try to reserve seats on the scenic train from Nanu Oya to Ella and arrange safari jeeps, and we pass on the price we pay. We do not book accommodation, so you are free to choose and book the places you like best. Your driver is happy to suggest areas that suit your route.
What's the best time to visit?
The west and south coasts and the hill country are best from December to April. The east coast is best from May to September. There is usually good weather somewhere on the island, though October and November can bring rain almost everywhere.
How many days do I need?
Seven days covers the highlights at a comfortable pace. Ten to fourteen days lets you add the east coast, more wildlife or simply slower days at the beach.
