3 routes to start from

Every route is a starting point. Your driver and the pace are yours, and we'll change the stops until it fits.

Is Sri Lanka good for a family holiday with kids?

Very good. Distances are short, the food can be as mild as you like, and there is something different every day: an elephant safari, a train ride through the clouds, a boat trip through mangroves and a beach to finish. Sri Lankans are warm with children, which makes a big difference when you are travelling with them.

The trick is pacing. Children cope better with two nights in most places and drives of three hours or less. We plan around nap times and meals, and your driver will stop whenever someone needs a break.

Sri Lankan food is easy to adapt. Hotels serve plenty of familiar dishes alongside rice and curry, and your driver knows clean roadside places for a cold drink, fresh fruit or a toilet stop. Bottled water is sold everywhere.

What is the best family-friendly route in Sri Lanka?

For a first trip, the 10-day Classic Sri Lanka Round Tour breaks the island into drives of mostly three to four hours, with one or two longer days: Kandy, the tea hills, Ella, a jeep safari in Yala and the south coast. With younger children or less time, Kandy, Tea Country & the Coast is a gentle five-day loop that ends at the beach in Bentota.

Children usually love the open jeeps. Elephants are easy to see all year at Udawalawe, and from roughly July to October elephants gather at Minneriya and Kaudulla, close to Sigiriya, though numbers vary with the water level. Half-day drives suit younger children best.

The train is another favourite. A shorter stretch of the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella line, for example from Haputale or Bandarawela, is often enough for younger children, and your driver can collect you at a station along the way rather than at the end.

Which beaches are best for children?

Look for calm, shallow water. From November or December to April, Bentota and the sheltered bays of the south coast are good choices. From May to September, Pasikudah on the east coast has a long, reef-protected bay that stays shallow a long way out. Always check local advice before swimming, because currents can be strong on the monsoon side of the island.

What vehicle do we need for a family tour?

Most families of four or more are more comfortable in a van, with room for luggage, a buggy and snacks within reach. Compare the options on our vehicles page.

Your driver meets you at arrivals, which matters after a long flight with tired children. Our airport arrival guide explains what to expect when you land.

Questions

Family: common questions

How long are the drives on a family tour?

We aim to keep most driving days to three hours or less, with breaks along the way. A few longer days may be needed depending on your route, and we plan those for the morning.

What is the best age to take children to Sri Lanka?

Families travel with all ages. Children from about five upwards tend to get the most from safaris, the train and the hikes, but younger ones enjoy the beaches and the animals too.

Can my children climb Sigiriya?

Many children manage it with an early start and plenty of water. Some sections near the top are steep and exposed, so it is best for confident walkers who are happy with heights.

What should we pack for kids in Sri Lanka?

Sun hats, sun cream, insect repellent, light long sleeves for the evenings and a warm layer for the hill country. Swim shoes are handy on some beaches.
