The hill country climbs from Kandy up through tea estates to Nuwara Eliya at about 1,870 m, then drops to the village of Ella at about 1,040 m. On the way you pass waterfalls such as Ramboda Falls and working tea factories where you can watch the leaf being withered, rolled and dried, then taste it fresh.
In Nuwara Eliya there are colonial bungalows, Gregory Lake and Hakgala Gardens. Ella is for walking: Little Adam's Peak is an easy morning hike, Ella Rock a longer one, and Nine Arches Bridge is a short stroll through the tea.
Coming up from Colombo, Kitulgala makes a good break on the way, with white-water rafting on the Kelani River and rainforest walks. Nature lovers can also add an early start for Horton Plains near Nuwara Eliya, a high plateau of grassland and cloud forest that is best before the mist rolls in.
Yes, if you can get a seat. Storm damage in late 2025 closed the line between Kandy and Nanu Oya, and it is still being repaired. The most scenic stretch, from Nanu Oya to Ella, is running again and crosses Nine Arches Bridge. Your driver takes you by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya, near Nuwara Eliya, you ride the train for about three hours, and your driver meets you in Ella with the bags. Reserved seats usually go on sale about a month ahead and sell out in busy months, so we can try to book for you as soon as they open. If the train is full, your driver simply takes you by road instead.
When you do ride the train, your luggage goes with the car and your driver is waiting on the platform at the other end, so you travel light. If you would rather drive, Kandy to Ella by road takes about 4.5 to 5 hours with stops at viewpoints and a tea factory.
Allow at least three nights: one in Kandy, one near Nuwara Eliya and one in Ella, and two in Ella if you like to hike. Hill roads are slow, so a short distance can take a long time. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is about 75 km but takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
The 10-day Classic Sri Lanka Round Tour gives two nights among the tea estates before Ella. For a short trip, Kandy, Tea Country & the Coast fits a night in Nuwara Eliya into five days.
January to March usually brings the clearest views. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings more mist and showers, but the hills are very green and still worth visiting. Nights in Nuwara Eliya are cool all year, so pack a warm layer. Early April is busy with local holidaymakers around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Whatever the month, mornings are usually the clearest part of the day in the hills. Plan hikes and viewpoints early, and keep the afternoons for tea factories, gardens or a slow drive between towns.
Questions
They are different. Nuwara Eliya is higher and cooler, with tea estates and colonial character. Ella is smaller and more relaxed, with easy hikes. Most travellers spend a night or two in each.
Yes. Your driver can stop at a working tea factory for a short tour and a tasting, and we can arrange a guided walk through a plantation near Nuwara Eliya.
You can still enjoy the hills. Your driver takes the scenic road, stopping wherever you want, so you see the same tea country from the car.
Nuwara Eliya can be chilly in the early morning and at night, so bring a fleece or light jacket. Ella and Kandy are milder.
