Which coast is best for a Sri Lanka beach holiday?

It depends on the month. The west and south coasts are usually at their best from around November or December to April, when the sea is calm and the skies are clear. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rougher seas there, and the east coast takes over with calm, clear water.

Our best time to visit guide goes through the weather month by month. Tell us your dates and we will point you to the sunny side.

What are the best beaches on the south and west coast?

Bentota is about 1.5 to 2 hours from the airport and good for calm water, river trips and an easy first or last night. Galle has its UNESCO-listed fort, with cafés and sunset walks on the ramparts. Mirissa is a palm-fringed bay and the base for whale watching from November to April. Further east, Tangalle has long, quieter beaches.

The south coast pairs well with Yala, about 2.5 to 3 hours away. Our 7-day Sri Lanka Discovery ends with a safari, Mirissa and Galle Fort.

When should I visit the east coast beaches?

Roughly May to September. Trincomalee and nearby Nilaveli have clear water and snorkelling around Pigeon Island. Pasikudah is a long, shallow bay sheltered by a reef, good for calm swimming. Surfers head to Arugam Bay, where the best waves usually come from June to August.

Trincomalee is about 5.5 to 6 hours from the airport, so it is best reached from the Cultural Triangle. The 14-day Grand Tour with the East Coast does exactly that. From about November to February the east coast is usually wet and many beach hotels there close or run quietly, so save it for the summer months.

How do you add beach days to a round trip?

Most people end with the beach, so the long drives are behind them and they can rest before flying home. Two or three nights is usually enough to unwind. Choose a hotel with a good stretch of sand on its doorstep, and your driver can take you out for a day trip to Galle Fort or a turtle hatchery at Kosgoda if you get restless. Tell us your dates on Plan my trip and we will suggest the right coast.

The beach also works well at the start. Negombo is only 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, so a first night there lets you sleep off the flight before the longer drive inland. On a short stay, a few days in Bentota or Galle followed by the drive back to the airport makes a simple, restful trip.

Questions

Beaches & Coast: common questions

Is it safe to swim in the sea in Sri Lanka?

In the right season and at the right beach, yes. Currents can be strong, especially on the monsoon side of the island, so swim where locals and hotels say it is safe and watch for red flags.

Can I have a beach holiday in Sri Lanka in July?

Yes. Head to the east coast, around Trincomalee, Nilaveli or Pasikudah, where July is usually dry and the sea is calm.

Which beach is best for whale watching?

Mirissa, from roughly November to April. On the east coast, boats go out from Trincomalee from roughly March or April to August or September.

How many beach days should I add to my tour?

Two to three nights is a good balance at the end of a round trip. If the beach is the main point of your holiday, a week split between two places works well.
