How do you plan a wildlife tour around Sri Lanka?

The national parks sit on or near the classic touring routes, so wildlife fits into a normal round trip rather than needing a separate holiday. Minneriya and Kaudulla are a short drive from Sigiriya. Yala is about two to two and a half hours below Ella. Udawalawe sits between the hills and the south coast, and Wilpattu is a few hours north of Negombo.

Your driver takes you to the park, where you switch to a licensed safari jeep for the drive itself, and is waiting when you come out. Our safaris page covers how each park works and the choice between private and shared jeeps. This page is about fitting them into a longer trip.

Where is the best leopard safari in Sri Lanka?

Yala is the best known, and early morning drives give the best chance of a leopard. It gets busy at peak times, so we aim for quieter blocks. Blocks 1 and 2 usually close for one to two months around September and October, while other blocks stay open.

Wilpattu is the quieter choice: far fewer jeeps, natural lakes and patient sightings of leopards and sloth bears. Our 21-day Ultimate Sri Lanka includes both parks. For a shorter trip, our 7-day Sri Lanka Discovery has a morning in Yala.

If leopards are the main goal, book two or three drives rather than one. Each drive is a fresh chance, and staying near the park gate the night before means you are in the queue early instead of driving in the dark.

When is the best time for an elephant safari or whale watching?

Elephants are easy to see all year at Udawalawe. From roughly July to October, elephants come to graze on the shores of the old reservoirs at Minneriya and nearby Kaudulla as the dry season shrinks the water. Numbers vary from year to year with the water level, so we check where the herds are before deciding which park to take you to.

Whale watching follows the monsoons. Off Mirissa the season runs roughly November to April, and off Trincomalee roughly March or April to August or September. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the boats go out looking for blue whales and spinner dolphins. Birdwatchers can add Bundala's lagoons from September to March, or the Sinharaja rainforest for endemic species.

Why use a private driver for a safari holiday?

Game drives start before sunrise, and the best ones are often followed by a long drive to the next stop. With your own driver you can rest in the car, stop for breakfast when you like and switch parks if the season or the weather calls for it.

A sample week might run like this: Sigiriya and an evening jeep at Minneriya, Kandy and the hills, then down from Ella for a dawn drive in Yala and on to Mirissa for a whale-watching boat. That is four very different wildlife experiences without a single long detour.

Tell us which animals you most want to see and your travel dates on Plan my trip, and we will suggest the parks that suit that time of year.

Questions

Wildlife & Safari: common questions

Can I see leopards and elephants on the same trip?

Yes. A route that includes Minneriya or Udawalawe for elephants and Yala or Wilpattu for leopards fits easily into a week or more. Most round tours pass close to both.

Is a morning or afternoon safari better?

Early morning is best for leopards and cooler for you. Afternoon drives have softer light and suit days when you are travelling in the morning.

Is Yala open in September?

Blocks 1 and 2 usually close for one to two months around September and October, while other blocks stay open. The dates are set each year, so we check before planning your safari.

Are children allowed on safari jeeps?

Yes. Jeeps are open-sided and children usually love them. Bring a hat, water and sun cream, and choose a half-day drive for younger children.

Can you guarantee whale sightings?

No one honestly can. Whales are wild and sightings depend on the sea and the season, but in season the chances off Mirissa and Trincomalee are good.
