There is no direct train from the airport. Trains from Colombo Fort to Kandy take about 2.5–3 hours, so with the trip into Colombo first, a car is usually faster.
A private car costs more than a bus, but it leaves when you are ready, carries all your bags and takes you to the door. Split between two or more people, the difference is often small.
